What Your Service Project Needs to Take Off

As a culture we are not very comfortable receiving help. Yet sometimes our strong value in doing everything ourselves can be limiting. Particularly when it comes to the work we do to make a difference. Community connection is a powerful, but unervalued, resource that can increase the impact of any fundraiser, project, or drive.

The former co-worker who branched out to start a business, the person who cuts your hair and the boutique shop you stop into every time you’re in the neighborhood are just the beginning of potential community partners who can help multiply your success.

Community connections helped service projects blossom for the ESA Eta Pi chapter of Fishers, Indiana this year when a local bar, a six year sponsor of the chapter’s annual golf outing for St. Jude, closed leaving them unsure about the future of their benefit. Help came in the form of a fellow service organization, the American Legion 470 in Fishers, IN.

“The Legion had supported our outing the last 5 years, donating sponsorships and foursomes. They knew that we work hard and put on a fun and successful outing.” said member Kelly Hansan.

The partnership was a natural one for Eta Pi and together the 2017 golf outing raised over $15,000 for the kids at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. But that isn’t the end of the story for this community partnership.

The two chapters began discussing other challenges they faced in serving their community and the American Legion also offered the chapter a room in their building to meet, free of charge, and to partner with the chapter for their “Hope For Heroes Winter Warm Up for Homeless Veterans” fundraising where they also saw an increase in donations.

After such a helpful connection Hansan suggested, “If you are looking for some support for your project, think about teaming up with your local American Legion Post.”

Take stock of the businesses, organizations and individuals who are active members of your community. No matter who you partner with or what project you take on together you are sure to make an even greater difference.
