Who We Are
Epsilon Sigma Alpha (ESA) is a unique international service and leadership organization built on a foundation of volunteering, friendship, and personal growth. Since 1929, ESA members have been making a difference in communities across the U.S., Australia, and Canada, contributing more than 860,000 volunteer hours annually.
Through hands-on service, fundraising events, and leadership development, ESA empowers members to be the change they want to see in the world. Whether supporting local causes or global initiatives, ESA provides opportunities to grow, connect, and serve.
What We Do
At Epsilon Sigma Alpha (ESA), we believe in Good Friends, Good Works, and Good Times. Through hands-on involvement in Education, Service, and Association, we grow as individuals, give back to our communities, and build lasting friendships.
Education
ESA has always been rooted in learning—whether through personal growth, leadership development, or supporting formal education. Members gain hands-on leadership experience by leading projects, chairing committees, and taking on officer roles. ESA offers training, mentorship, and seminars to develop skills that benefit both members and their communities.
We also encourage lifelong learning, from collegiate opportunities to professional development. The ESA Foundation further supports education through scholarships and grants, helping members and students achieve their academic goals.
“The leadership skills and confidence I’ve gained through ESA have been instrumental in my life.” – Vicky, Kentucky
Service
ESA members believe one person can make a difference. Each year, ESA members contribute over 850,000 hours of direct service and raise more than $1 million for charitable causes, including our longtime partner, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
Every member and chapter decides how they want to serve—whether it’s fundraising, hands-on volunteer work, or supporting causes that matter most to them. ESA empowers you to turn your passion into action and create lasting change.
“ESA is a service organization—not only for your community but for communities around the world.” – Sarah, Louisiana
Association
ESA is more than an organization—it’s a community. Members form lifelong friendships while working together toward a common purpose. Whether you join an existing chapter, start your own, or participate as an individual, ESA membership is flexible and designed to fit your life.
No matter your background or experience, ESA welcomes those who are ready to lead, serve, and connect with others who share their passion for making a difference.
“What do I love about ESA? Everything! The best thing about ESA is all the fabulous people I have met.” – Janene, Kansas

How ESA Works
ESA is guided by the ESA Membership Corporation (ESAMC), which includes both a Board of Directors and a professional staff. The ESAMC ensures the long-term strength of ESA, overseeing programs, financial stewardship, and member services.
The ESAMC also works in partnership with:
- The ESA International Council (IC) Board to host the ESA International Council Convention, an annual gathering that celebrates service, leadership, and community.
- The ESA Foundation, a separate 501(c)(3) nonprofit that provides scholarships and grants. While the ESA Foundation operates independently, the ESAMC supports its efforts to expand educational opportunities and philanthropic giving.

Our Legacy & History
Founded in 1929 in Jacksonville, Texas, ESA was established to empower individuals through education, service, and leadership. The organization’s early focus on learning and literature evolved to include philanthropy and community service, leading to partnerships with organizations like the USO, the Red Cross, and the March of Dimes.
In 1972, ESA adopted St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital as its first international service project and remains the hospital’s largest third-party donor. In 1988, ESA expanded to college campuses, launching Collegiate ESA, which continues to develop young leaders through service and personal development.
Today, ESA is a thriving network of nearly 800 local and collegiate chapters and 10,000+ members, committed to building a better world through friendship, service, and leadership.
